Student Engagement
I choose this video because as a teacher in the classroom, I find it difficult to believe that online classes can compete with face-to-face class in terms of engaging the students. But at least according to the opinion of one blogger, Ralph Losey, familiar with online education, online education will surpass traditional face-to-face education in the next 5-10 years. (4 years have pasted since the original post date: 2/7/2010 ). To those attending classes at the university level might find that hard to believe. Is Losey talking about the quality of online education surpassing face-to-face education or is he talking about the number of students taking online classes verse face-to-face classes? His writing gives clue that he means the number of students enrolled will surpass traditional class numbers. He points to research that shows that online education is already more effective than face-to-face classes.
However, at least in the realm of student engagement, online classes can’t compete with face-to-face class for obvious reasons. This is why Larry Ragan emphasizes student engagement for success in online teaching. As technology improves student engagement will increase. Teachers are using web surveys, quizzes and polls to engage students. They can no longer tune teachers out. Discussion boards and web interactivity is bridging the gap in engagement between online learning and face-to-face classes. The level of engagement technology offers is something to be envied about in face-to-face classes. In this area face-to-face classes are playing catchup to online classes. One-to-One computer/tablet initiative is one way this gap is being addressed in traditional classes.
